We will see how to design and implement the sound of dragon wings in Atom Craft, which will be useful for other types of flying beasts as well.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 700px; margin: 0 auto; margin-bottom: 20px; border: 1px solid #aaa;\">\n<div style=\"width: 800px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-4908-1\" width=\"800\" height=\"423\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Video_DragonWings.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Video_DragonWings.mp4\">https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Video_DragonWings.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h1 style=\"font-size: 150%; font-weight: bold; margin-top: 40px;\">Asset Creation<\/h1>\n<p>When designing the sounds of large flapping wings, a common method consists in recording heavy cloth or large sheets, and layering them with whooshes.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, to prepare our audio assets, we will need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Record &#8211; or generate \u2013 your source material (different types of cloth, whooshes, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Layer the sounds in your DAW, and adjust their individual timings to create an interesting combination.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare 10 variations, preferably with similar durations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can then export either a mixdown of the whole sound or each layer separately (if you want to generate more variations). For the latter, make sure that your timings will produce a convincing final sound when played back in Atom Craft.<\/p>\n<p>Once everything is rendered, you can import all the sounds in your Materials folder.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"font-size: 150%; font-weight: bold; margin-top: 40px;\">Implementation<\/h1>\n<p>From there, we can start with the implementation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a new <strong>Polyphonic Cue<\/strong> called Dragon Wings.<\/li>\n<li>Add a Track and create a <strong>Sub Sequence<\/strong> of type <strong>Shuffle<\/strong> to it.<\/li>\n<li>Select the Sub Sequence in the Work Unit Tree, then drag and drop all your wing sounds onto it to automatically create the Tracks and their Waveform Regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/01-Sequence.png\" alt=\"01 Sequence\" width=\"1103\" height=\"703\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/01-Sequence.png 1103w, https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/01-Sequence-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/01-Sequence-768x489.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/01-Sequence-1024x653.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1103px) 100vw, 1103px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When triggering the Cue, a single sound will be played. However, to simulate a flying creature, this sound will need to be played at regular intervals.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the Sub Sequence and, in the <strong>Inspector<\/strong>, go to the <em>Timing Control<\/em> section.<\/li>\n<li>Change the <em>Auto Repeat Interval<\/em> property to 1000ms, so that the Sub Sequence will repeat itself indefinitely.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, change the Playback Timing Random property to 50 ms to add a bit of variation in the timing.<\/li>\n<li>As a final touch, you can also add <em>Volume<\/em> and <em>Pitch Random Range<\/em><em>s<\/em> to the Sub Sequence to produce more variations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/02-SubSeq-Timing-Control.png\" alt=\"02 SubSeq Timing Control\" width=\"951\" height=\"405\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4916\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/02-SubSeq-Timing-Control.png 951w, https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/02-SubSeq-Timing-Control-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.criware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/02-SubSeq-Timing-Control-768x327.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 951px) 100vw, 951px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An AISAC can be used to control the rate of the wing flaps in real-time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create an <strong>AISAC-Control<\/strong> called \u201cWingsControl\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Select the Dragon Wings Cue and create an <strong>AISAC<\/strong> called Wing Rate.<\/li>\n<li>Add graphs to the AISAC: <em>Playback Rate<\/em>, <em>Pitch<\/em>, and <em>Bandpass &#8211; Cutoff Low<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Set the graphs as follows:\n<ul>\n<li>Playback Rate: from 0.70 to 2.40 with a <em>Fast Curve Type<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Pitch: from -400 to 300.<\/li>\n<li>Bandpass \u2013 Cutoff Low: from 0 to 0.2.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can now use the AISAC to control the rate at which the wings are flapping.
